GRAND RAPIDS, MI – On April 25, a dedicated team of 17 employees from Velo Law Office participated in ArborFest 2025, contributing to the Mayor’s Greening Initiative in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This annual event, organized by Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, aims to enhance the city’s tree canopy and promote environmental sustainability.
During the event, volunteers planted 203 trees across the Oakdale and Boston Square neighborhoods, with a total of 270 volunteers contributing 766 volunteer hours. Since its inception in 2015, the Mayor’s Greening Initiative has successfully planted over 4,000 trees through community-driven events like ArborFest and Neighborwoods.
Making Grand Rapids Greener
The Mayor’s Greening Initiative is a collaborative effort between the City of Grand Rapids, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, the City’s Forestry Division, and local neighborhood associations. Established in 2011 as part of the Green Grand Rapids amendment to the City’s master plan, the initiative sets a goal of achieving a 40% tree canopy across the city. As of the 2015 Tree Canopy Survey, the city had reached approximately 35% coverage.
By engaging community members, local businesses, and volunteers, the initiative focuses on planting trees in neighborhoods with lower canopy coverage, aiming to improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
